Basketmakers of Victoria is an active community organisation based in the historic Curator’s Cottage at Wattle Park, Surrey Hills. Since 1986, it has provided a welcoming space for connection and creative practice, offering both informal and structured learning opportunities in fibre arts and basketry techniques.

Representing an age-old fusion of form and function, basketry is both a purposeful and creative process. Fibres are often sourced from local backyard or parkland settings, and the resulting works manifest a deep connection with the makers’ surrounding environment. A slow and tactile practice, fibres can take up to a year to shrink and dry before use. Artists devote time to refining ideas and experimenting with weaving and basketry techniques, allowing the process of discovery to shape the final work.

In this celebratory exhibition, members of Basketmakers of Victoria have produced a vibrant array of works to contemplate, inspire and give pleasure.
