Teacher and author William Gillies once lived in Station Street Box Hill, before losing the land in the 1890s bank crashes. He became a prolific author of articles and books for children, and at his death in 1925, left a magnificent bequest to the schoolchildren of Victoria. The perpetual bequest allowed the establishment of numerous school bands, circulating libraries in rural areas, and nature study works.
The plaque will be unveiled by the Secretary of the Victorian Education Department.
