Sister City: 55 years of friendship with Matsudo

Since 12 May 1971 Box Hill and Matsudo have been sister cities. They share similar community values, urban characteristics and relative proximity to the larger cities of Melbourne and Tokyo. In 2026 they celebrate 55 years of friendship. This exhibition showcases 55 years of cultural exchange through documents, photographs, art and artefacts from Matsudo Japan.

Also featured are Japanese picture books gifted to Whitehorse City Council by Matsudo City Council in celebration of our valued Sister City relationship. These children's books foster connection between our communities, offering visitors an opportunity to engage with and appreciate Japanese language, stories, and culture.
