The Water Project was a collaborative exhibition between Box Hill Community Arts Centre and Afalyca Art Centre in Timor-Leste that explored people’s relationship to the precious resource that is water.
Internationally acclaimed ceramicist Prue Venables ran a series of workshops to brainstorm ideas and explore participants’ connection to water. Each participant created a ceramic vessel that tells the story of their individual knowledge and experiences of water. These stunning ceramic pieces were then exhibited at Box Hill Community Arts Centre (BHCAC).
Meanwhile, Trish Bourke – a tutor in watercolour and botanical drawing – visited Afalyca to work with artists there to produce lino cuts and watercolours based on the myths and contemporary use of water use in Timor-Leste.
Students from Afalyca travelled to Melbourne to attend the opening night of The Water Project exhibition at BHCAC and entertained guests with a special musical performance.
Held in 2013, The Water Project paid tribute to the UN International Year of Water Cooperation, which served to recognise that cooperation is essential to strike a balance between the different needs and priorities and share this precious resource equitably, using water as an instrument of peace.
