In this engaging and exploratory class, you will learn to draw, render and paint plants under the guidance of an experienced botanical artist. Working from botanical samples, you will develop observational drawing skills using 3H, HB and 2B pencils, alongside still life techniques.
This course offers a unique opportunity to explore natural pigments. Rather than purchasing paints, participants are encouraged to bring materials that release colour when mixed with water, such as teas (hibiscus, black, nettle), turmeric, onion skins, flower petals or other plant-based sources. These will be used in a similar way to watercolour, allowing you to experiment with transparency, layering, colour mixing and botanical observation through natural materials.
This is a relaxed and collaborative environment where participants can share materials, experiment freely, and work at their own pace. You may choose to create multiple small studies or develop a single piece over several sessions.
This is an 8-week course.
Please bring along the following materials:
- Watercolour paper (any size they prefer, ideally several sheets so they can experiment with different formats and paper types)
- Drawing pencils (3H, HB and 3B are ideal, though any similar pencils would be fine)
- A few watercolour brushes in different sizes
- Optional coloured pencils if they would like to incorporate them into their work
- Botanical subjects they would like to draw and paint, such as dried plants, leaves, flowers, seed pods, fruits, or other natural specimens
